About the Artist
I am Aisling Svennungsen, full time designer and jewelry-maker. The Moss Follows jewelry line came to be during an artist residency that I attended after graduating from RISD in 2012. It was during that time at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, in Otis, OR that I had the physical and mental space to refine some experiments from college. The Oregon Coast inspired many new things, wearable and sculptural. Now, I design and create each piece out of my home studio in Northern California.
About the Jewelry
The new and vintage chains I use are made of soldered links, for a delicate look that is lightweight but strong. Because of my sources, the styles of chain often change, ranging in color and texture. I use a wide range of metals, including raw brass, copper, silver, and gold-fill. All components and findings are handmade by myself. For ear wires, I use 20-gauge sterling silver, or 14k gold-filled. Stones and crystals are crocheted with sterling silver or gold-filled 30-gauge wire.
Due to the elements I use, (crystals, stones, lots of chain ;) some of my earrings are on the heavier side.
Now, the average pair of everyday earrings weighs less than 6 grams. That being said, many of my designs weigh in at 5, or even 4 grams. (including small, and XS sizes in my classic long triangle style) BUT some of them are 25 grams or more (think quartz clusters suspended in giant gold hoops with multiple crocheted chains dangling from them!)
To make online shopping easier, in my item descriptions, I score each pair of earrings depending on their weight on a scale of 1-10, with one being the lightest and ten being the heaviest.
Everyone has different taste and sensitivities, so I hope that my "lightness score" helps with the decision-making process.
